Study of Brenta Valley - Italian Foreign Studies Program
A Project sponsored by the Provincial Administration of Vicenza
This work eventually led to the communities’ of Valstagna and Oliero in the Brenta River valley adopting my design, and in their undertaking construction of the first segment of my plan in 1997-98.
| Site | | The Brenta Valley of the Veneto Region, Italy | |
| Objective | | To investigate two architectural and landscape issues: the idea and poetics of bridging communities; the concern of built from intervention on natural form and cultural context. |
| Analysis | | River Brenta used to be the artery of the Brenta Valley for both commercial and industrial transportation. The industry has declined from its climax and the valley is now used for cycling and hiking by out-of-towners on weekend getaways because of its natural beauty. As in most European villages, roads along the river are narrow. Local seniors enjoy visiting their close-by friends and neighbors on foot. Hence, there exists conflict of usage among pedestrians, cyclists and automobile drivers. Moreover, due to development along the river, the river views have been blocked and the beauty of the river is almost forgotten by locals. |
| Concept | | Promenade on the bank:- to bring pedestrians and local people back to the river, and
- to resolve the traffic conflicts.
| Strategy | | - Study the relationship among the river, the existing road system and local villages;
- Look for point of interest on the river and possible connections among the road, the villages, and the river;
- Employ local material as the construction material of the promenade.
